So yeah, my mind has a great long-term memory but a horrible short-term memory. Here's a list of things you never let me do.
- Never give me something to give back to you in a few hours. I will lose it.
- Never let me put something down for a second. It will take me an hour to find where I put it. Keys, remote controls, pens, water bottles...the best one is that I misplace my clipboard all the time. My students always have to tell me where it is. I feel like Mr. Magoo or someone with Alzheimer's.
- Never tell me to remember a phone number or e-mail address without a pen or my phone around. (maybe not even with a phone because I turn into Guy Pierce and start tattooing my hands with numbers and words with ink...even then, I'll forget why I wrote those words down...it's sad to have blue and black all over my hands and have no clue why I did it. I have stopped writing on my hands.).
- Never tell me anything in passing. I'll remember 4 days later in the shower that I had to do something for you.
I'm so bad with misplacing and forgetting where things are that if I have something important to bring with me. I will lay my keys, phone, & wallet on top of whatever it is before I go to sleep or when I know I have to go somewhere soon so when I go out, then hey, it's there to bring with me.
I've even forgotten my work laptop to work a few times (with all my work for the next day in it). I hate having a horrible short-term memory.
Here's what I've been doing. I carry around a notepad or sticky pads so I can write down all the things I have to do. My laptop has a sticky note program. I have a to-do list app on my smart phone. It's really sad but I get what I need done this way. I will never remember what I have to do today but I can name all 50 states in less than 3 minutes...man, I wish I had skills that were useful....
Application for all of you out there: So here's what you do. Text, e-mail, write a note, put in on Google calendar...leave me something or you will experience my forgetfulness.

i can't believe how similar we are in many aspects. on an optimistic note, you never know when reciting all 50 states in 3 minutes will be useful :)
